March Principal's Message

Posted in Principal's Message

We are down to the last three months of school. Even though the topic of this message is happening in April, now is the time to put it on your calendar. April 2nd and 3rd (Thursday and Friday) we will be putting on this years play production. This event will be open to the public at 10:30am on both days.

Our recent productions have included Beauty and the Beast, High School Musical, Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, and The Little Mermaid. This year the musical production is my all time favorite and I know most lines already since both my daughters loved watching it. This year we are proud to put on MULAN.

Each year every student in the building participates in the play. It is amazing to see how the students grow into their roles over 4-6 weeks of practice sessions. Our Music Teacher Caitlin Barney and all our staff needs to be commended for all their efforts in making this happen.

See you at the Play!

JVS Principal’s Message/School Community Council Candidate Form                                                                                                                                                  September 2015

Thank you everyone for your amazing support at our Back to School Night held September 1st.  We had over 300 people attend our outside carnival and BBQ.  Some classrooms had 90% parent/guardian attendance.  Teachers enjoyed showing off their classrooms and their plans for your Jordan Valley student for the year.

Mark your Calendar for Parent Teacher Conferences:  They will be October 7th and 8th from 4:15-8:15.  Your student’s teacher will call you and personally invite you.  Our PTA will be having a meet and greet for families each evening with snacks provided.

It is time to join our School Community Council.  See the information below on how to join.  Please by this Friday the 18th of September call the main office to sign up (801-826-7200) or get this form into the main office by then.

School Community Council Candidate Form

Serving on the School Community Council

Serving on our School Community Council is a wonderful way for parents and teachers to contribute and help improve academic and functional skills performance at our school. The school receives an annual dividend from the school trust lands. Our council decides how these funds will be used.  This year our school received about $5,900 from the School LAND Trust Program. The council reviews and prepares other academic/life skills plans for our students each year.  All plans are reviewed for final approval by our school board. Councils also act in an advisory capacity to school and school district administrations.

Every public school in Utah has School Community Council.  The councils are made up of school employees who are elected by employees and parents who are elected by parents of students attending the school.  Membership terms are for two years.  Elections are held at the beginning of each school year.

Parent/guardians members must have a student attending the school at least one of the two years of their term of service.  Employees must be employed by the school district at the school.

June-July 2015

Jordan Valley Parents, Guardians, and Friends:

The 2014-2015 school year has come to a close.  I would like to thank all of our families and friends for helping us make our year a success.  I want to wish everyone a safe and wonderful summer break.

We are starting another phase in our building remodel. During the summer months, all rooms that are not classrooms will be renovated.  This will include all of the front office areas.  Our offices will be located in the cafeteria for the summer.  We will be here all of June, the last week of July, and all of August.  There will be days the first three weeks of July that the front doors will be locked.  Please call our office line at 801-826-7200 if you need to reach us.

School registration will start the beginning of August.  All students need to be registered on-line each year.  You will be receiving information from the district on how and when to register your student.  We can also help you at Jordan Valley and will have computers available for your use.

Our hours next year will change and we will follow the Elementary school calendar for Canyons School District.  Here are Jordan Valley School student hours for the 2015-2016 school year:

Monday-Thursday: 9:25 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Fridays: 9:25 a.m. - 2:20 p.m.

The first day of school will be Wednesday, August 19th.  Please remember students cannot be put on a transportation list until they have completed on-line registration.

Thank you again to all of our Jordan Valley supporters!!!!

February Principal’s Message

I would like to thank our parents, guardians and group homes for your participation in our
Parent Teacher Conferences (PTC) this week. We had 80% parent/Guardian participation. PTCs are a great time to celebrate your student’s activities, projects, and progress in his or her classroom.

Phase 2 of our building remodel will be starting, hopefully, in March. Two classrooms at a time will be completely renovated. This will include bathrooms and kitchenettes. The Remodel will begin in the South end of the building.

DLM? Remember how at each IEP and at the end of the year we talk about UAA (Utah Alternative Assessment)? We still will talk about UAA and your student will be assessed but only for Science. Students will be assessed in English Language Arts and Math using Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM). This assessment will take place three times a year and will start this Spring.

Here is a quick explanation of DLM with more information available at

“The Dynamic Learning MapsTM (DLM®) project offers an innovative way for all students with significant cognitive disabilities to demonstrate their learning throughout the school year via the DLM Alternate Assessment System. Traditional multiple-choice testing does not always allow students with significant cognitive disabilities to fully demonstrate their knowledge. By integrating assessment with instruction during the year and providing a year-end assessment, the DLM system maps student learning aligned with college and career readiness standards in English language arts and mathematics.

The DLM system is accessible by students with significant cognitive disabilities, including those who also have hearing or visual disabilities, and/or neuromuscular, orthopedic, or other motor disabilities. DLM assessments are flexible. They allow for the use of common assistive technologies in addition to keyboard and mouse and touch-screen technology”.
