June-July 2015

Jordan Valley Parents, Guardians, and Friends:

The 2014-2015 school year has come to a close.  I would like to thank all of our families and friends for helping us make our year a success.  I want to wish everyone a safe and wonderful summer break.

We are starting another phase in our building remodel. During the summer months, all rooms that are not classrooms will be renovated.  This will include all of the front office areas.  Our offices will be located in the cafeteria for the summer.  We will be here all of June, the last week of July, and all of August.  There will be days the first three weeks of July that the front doors will be locked.  Please call our office line at 801-826-7200 if you need to reach us.

School registration will start the beginning of August.  All students need to be registered on-line each year.  You will be receiving information from the district on how and when to register your student.  We can also help you at Jordan Valley and will have computers available for your use.

Our hours next year will change and we will follow the Elementary school calendar for Canyons School District.  Here are Jordan Valley School student hours for the 2015-2016 school year:

Monday-Thursday: 9:25 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Fridays: 9:25 a.m. - 2:20 p.m.

The first day of school will be Wednesday, August 19th.  Please remember students cannot be put on a transportation list until they have completed on-line registration.

Thank you again to all of our Jordan Valley supporters!!!!

February Principal’s Message

I would like to thank our parents, guardians and group homes for your participation in our
Parent Teacher Conferences (PTC) this week. We had 80% parent/Guardian participation. PTCs are a great time to celebrate your student’s activities, projects, and progress in his or her classroom.

Phase 2 of our building remodel will be starting, hopefully, in March. Two classrooms at a time will be completely renovated. This will include bathrooms and kitchenettes. The Remodel will begin in the South end of the building.

DLM? Remember how at each IEP and at the end of the year we talk about UAA (Utah Alternative Assessment)? We still will talk about UAA and your student will be assessed but only for Science. Students will be assessed in English Language Arts and Math using Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM). This assessment will take place three times a year and will start this Spring.

Here is a quick explanation of DLM with more information available at dynamiclearningmaps.org:

“The Dynamic Learning MapsTM (DLM®) project offers an innovative way for all students with significant cognitive disabilities to demonstrate their learning throughout the school year via the DLM Alternate Assessment System. Traditional multiple-choice testing does not always allow students with significant cognitive disabilities to fully demonstrate their knowledge. By integrating assessment with instruction during the year and providing a year-end assessment, the DLM system maps student learning aligned with college and career readiness standards in English language arts and mathematics.

The DLM system is accessible by students with significant cognitive disabilities, including those who also have hearing or visual disabilities, and/or neuromuscular, orthopedic, or other motor disabilities. DLM assessments are flexible. They allow for the use of common assistive technologies in addition to keyboard and mouse and touch-screen technology”.

Jordan Valley is excited to announce that we are now implementing the Canyons School District’s Digital Citizenship Program. Our coordinator is Deven  Perry and he will be sending out monthly emails to our teachers with supplemental supplies for them to add to their classroom. These will be things like video links, posters and printables. We are excited to implement this program.

Principal’s Message February 23rd I would like to thank all the parents and guardians that were able to attend the family meeting as part of the External Visit from AdvancEd. AdvancEd is the company that oversees the accreditation process for Jordan Valley and all the High Schools in Canyons District. They were very impressed with the input from families and the Jordan Valley staff and students. They did approve us for accreditation. It has been an extremely good self-reflection process for Jordan Valley. Our School Musical Aladdin is coming up soon. The classrooms are deep into their play practice sessions and are doing a great job. Our dates have been pushed back one day. The new dates will be Wednesday March 23rd and Friday March 24th at 10:30 am in the Jordan Valley Cafeteria. We look forward to seeing you.
